Fathers are seen by society as protectors, providers and givers of wisdom. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, ethnicities, educational backgrounds, and can be a member of any religion or socio-economic class. As Christians, we understand that being a father is more than just impregnating a woman, it is a God-given job that a man should take seriously which involves loving, nurturing, educating his children about right and wrong behavior, offering structure, and disciplining his children when needed. Proverbs 22:6 says to train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Being a father is a tall order. So much is expected, and sometimes the job is a thankless one. If men are to strive to be really good fathers, then, the best way to do so is to look to the Word for instruction.
The bible describes God as our “father” (Abba) and the “Good Shepherd” over all (John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.). Some of the names used to describe His characteristics are: being peaceful and loving (Jehovah Shalom), protector (Jehovah Nissi) and provider (Jehovah Yireh). He loves us unconditionally, he is forgiving (remember the parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke chapter 15), and selfless (John 3:16 which is embodied by His gift to us, His only begotten son -- Jesus).
As the month of June comes to a close, take a moment to think about how your father, uncle, or someone who stood in the gap and acted like a dad to you sacrificed and tried to make your life better in some way, and thank him,
Blessings!
